  • A Dragon Fruit Tree is basically a cactus vine of the genus Hylocereus.
  • It is native to Central Americas but now grown all over the world especially in the tropical countries.
  • This fruit is famous in Thailand, Israel and Sri Lanka but now in Knocking at our door in India.
  • This Fruit production is very good in regions where less rainfall is expect.
  • This fruit plant is treat as an ornamental plant as well as fruit producing plant.
  • Dragon fruit is consume as a fresh fruit or can be use in jams, jelly production, fruit juice and also vine.
  • Main advantage of this fruit farming is not much disease effect this plant, common problems like root rot, sunburn, bird attacks etc cam be taken care of easily.

  1. Nutritive and Medical Value:-

  • In Dragon, 34% of Vitamin C, 3% of Vitamin B, 1.1 grams of Protein, 0.4 grams Fat, 3 grams of Fiber, 8.5 grams Calcium, 1.9 grams of Iron and 87 grams of water.

  1. How Can Grow…?


  • The most common method for dragon fruit cultivation is by cuttings.
  • It can also be propagate by seeds but as seeds take longer time. This method is not suitable for commercial cultivation.
  • You should get the plant cuttings from the quality mother plants.
  • An about 20 cm length cuttings should be use for planting in the field.
  • Pill up these cutting two days before the potting. And then this is potted with planting mixtures of Dry cow dung: soil: Sand as 1:1:2.
  • Keep the plant to plant space of 2 meter *2 meter. And pits size of 60 cm*60cm* 60 cm.
  • These pits should be filled with soil and compost with 100 grams of super phosphate.
  • Almost 1700 plants are getting in1 acre of land.

  1. Varieties of Dragon in India:

  • There are 3 types dragon fruit based on their color
  • Red color fruit with white color flesh.
  • Red color fruit with Red color flesh.
  • Yellow color fruit with white color flesh.
  • All Varieties have the flesh or dragon fruit pulp fill with lots of tiny black seeds which are edible with the fruit.
  1. Growing Requirement:

  • This Dragon fruit are cultivation in any soil conditions (poor) and also temperature.
  • Tropical climate region are best for its cultivation.
  • This plant requires annual rainfall of 50 cm and 20 to 30 C of temperature.
  • This fruit plant too much of sunlight is not good. So high sunlight areas should be providing shading for better yield.
  1. Suitable soil/Land Preparation:

  • Dragon fruit plants can tolerate any type of soil.
  • They grow well in well draining soils.
  • Water retaining soils can cause root rot and to avoid this fatal factor, soil may be mixed with sand or tiny stone gravels to facilitate water drainage.
  • Soil ph range of 5.5to 7 is best for Dragon fruit plants.
  • Sandy soils with good organic matter and internal drainage are best for Dragon fruit farming.
  1. Best Planting season:

  • Fruit planting season for Dragon is before April.
  • Fruit developing season for Dragon is July to August.
  1. Spacing Between Plants:
  • Keep the plant to plant space of 2 meter *2 meter. And pits size of 60 cm*60cm* 60 cm.
  • These pits should be filled with soil and compost with 100 grams of super phosphate.
  • For plant proper development and grow put the support of concrete or wooden columns.
  1. Fertilizers and Nutrition requirements:
  • In dragon fruit farming most important key role is Organic Matter for development and growth.
  • Each plant should be applied with 10 to 15 kg of organic comps/fertilizer.
  • Then increase the use of organic fertilizer amount is 2 kg per year.
  • At fruit bearing stage, low amount of nitrogen and high amount o potash should be apply for getting higher yield.
  1. Water supply/Irrigation:

  • There are many irrigation systems are available in latest technology like drip irrigation, micro jet, sprinkler irrigation and basin irrigation but dragon fruit plant requires less water compare to other fruit farming.
  • Drip irrigation method is suitable for Dragon plants.
  • The irrigation requires frequently in a different stage of dragon fruit farming like planting, flowering and fruit development stage.
  • Irrigation by flooding is not recommended as it wastes water and increases work of weeding.
  • Approximately 1 to 2 liters of water per day per plant is sufficient during the summer/dry days.
  • Water requirement may increase or decrease depending upon your soil, climate and Plant health.
  1. Disease:

  • Thrips
  • Mites
  • Mealybugs
  • Colletotrichum gloesporiodes
  • Aphids
  1. Inter-cropping:

  • It is not successfully with dragon fruit.
  1. Storage/Harvest:

  • The Dragon fruit gets the flowering in May to June month and fruits from Aug to Dec month.
  • After one year of planting Dragon fruit plant start bearing the fruits.
  • After one month of flowing stage, dragon fruits are ready for harvest.
  • The immature dragon fruit has a bright green colour skin.
  • After some day fruit skin turns in re colour from dark green.
  • The better harvesting time for dragon fruit is 3 to 4 days after fruit change its skin colour.
  • You can use the hand and sickle for picking the dragon fruit from the plant.

    I am a beginner, to dragonfruit, but the interesting part is to break the norm of Texas weather hazard, as I am from Ct. and tabacco and pigs are grown and raised their, healthy, but down here all my life of 50yrs I am a tropical lover and expect more from a plant than I uh-oh with it. I am in the first 6mos and doing great with one so far, two more species are on the way. GOD momma
